Rookwood Standard glaze pitcher documented to be the first Rookwood portrait of a Native American, done by Artus Van Briggle in 1889. The image is of a full moon silhouetting a male with headdress and shield, more of a figure study than a strict portrait. Impressed Rookwood logo with three flames, Shape number 259, S for sage green clay. Incised AVB/L for artist and light Standard glaze. Humler & Nolan paper label for lot 1168, Holiday Sale 2005. Height 8 inches. The vase is pictured and described on pages 72 and 73 in Ellis and Meyn, "Masterpieces of American Art Pottery from the James J Gardner Collection" jointly published by the Cincinnati Art Museum and Ohio University Press in 2008.
Very faint and minimal crazing. There is a bit of underglaze glaze separation in the moon which is all in the making.
