Over several decades, Kholodkov assembled an extraordinary collection of books, drawings, prints, and other works on paper, meticulously labeling, cataloguing, and preserving each piece. Many of these works came directly from leading artists of the Russian avant-garde, as well as from their families and estates. His collection also included a remarkable group of drawings from the renowned collection of Nikolai Khardzhiev, one of the most important scholars and collectors of the Russian avant-garde. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Kholodkov continued his work as a dealer, collector, and critic of Soviet art. He published extensively and contributed to several major exhibitions of the Russian avant-garde in the United States, including the 1991 exhibition Russia Under Fire in the '40s on the West Coast and the landmark 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also played an important role in preserving this cultural heritage for future generations. His sophisticated collection of more than 2,000 Russian sheet-music covers was acquired by the Library of Congress, while a substantial body of material relating to VKhUTEMAS entered the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
