Graesse: II, 211 FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of a tribute to Pope Clement XI (Giovanni Francesco Albani), a fine specimen of the Vatican printing office using hundreds of engraved historiated initials along with head and tail pieces. The work includes a full-page portrait of seated Clement XI and the Pope's Coat of Arms. The text, printed just after his death in 1721, consists of 94 orations delivered by Clement XI to his Council on a variety of subjects, including four on missionary activity in China (including his decision to forbid Jesuit missionaries from paying any honors to Confucius or ancestors of any of the emperors, whom he considered both uncivilized and idolatrous.) It was edited by his nephew, Annibale Albani, whom he appointed Cardinal Bishop of Sabina in 1711.
