Andrea Pozzo's monumental treatise is one of the most influential manuals on perspective and architectural illusion ever published. Originally issued in Rome in 1693, the work served as the definitive structural playbook for Baroque trompe-l'œil ceiling decoration, a technique Pozzo famously executed at the Church of Sant'Ignazio. The English translation by John James was championed by the leading arbiters of British architecture, including Sir Christopher Wren, John Vanbrugh, and Nicholas Hawksmoor, who all signed the formal approbation for the work. This 18th-century issue includes the renowned full-page engravings meticulously executed by John Sturt. It includes the famous structural plate detailing a draftsman's desk strewn with writing instruments, alongside a magnificent suite of historiated architectural initials.
