Amsterdam: Isaak Tirion, 1753. Folio (418 x 266 mm). Engraved title, engraved portrait by Jacobus Houbraken, and 8 engraved plates (one folding and 2 double-page). Late 19th-century half calf (some rubbing). Berlin Kat. 2968; Landwehr 228. [Bound with:] ANDRIESSEN, Andreas. Plegtige inhuldiging van... Willem Karel Hendrik Friso... als Markgraaf van Vere. Amsterdam: Isaak Tirion, 1751. 10 engraved plates (one folding) by J.C. Philips after P. Beuckelsz. Berlin Kat. 2967; Landwehr 227. [And with:] WAENAAR, Jan. 't Verheugd Amsterdam, ter gelegenheid van het plegtig bezoek... Willem, Prinse van Oranje en Nassau... en zyne Gemaalinne Fredrica Sophia Wilhelmina, Prinsesse van Pruissen... den 30 May... 1768. Amsterdam: Yntema en Tieboel, 1768. Engraved title, engraved title vignette, engraved portrait and 14 double-page engraved plates by Simon Fokke and Reiner Vinkeles. Berlin Kat. 2970; Landwehr 256; Lotz 103; Vinet 650. WITH A CONTEMPORARY MANUSCRIPT BOUND IN at the passage concerning the construction of the ceremonial box in the Amsterdam Schouwburg (p. 53): 6 leaves, Berigt aan de Leezers van het Verheugd Amsterdam, door Jan Wagenaar, in a fluent 18th-century Dutch copperplate hand, each leaf ruled. The text is a scribal transcript of an anonymous printed vindication of Wagenaar's account of the loge's construction, rebutting advertisements placed by the master carpenter Jan Smit, who publicly disputed Wagenaar's attribution of the design to the painter Andries Van Der Groen, citing corroborating testimony from the regent Mr. Jan Jacob Hartsinck. The final leaf, bearing a printer's triangular device, notes that the source pamphlet was 'door de Boekverkopers Yntema en Tieboel, in Octavo gedrukt, Gratis uitgegeven' - i.e., issued gratis in octavo by Wagenaar's own publishers, evidently as a print-trade rejoinder to Smit's advertisements. The text culminates in a biting piece of sarcasm, telling the master carpenter that if he cannot understand literary style or artistic collaboration, he should return to 'reading-school' (Leesschool) and 'drawing-school' (Tekenschool). The full-page inverted triangle functions as an architectural visual anchor to seal the argument. Not identified in Landwehr, Berlin, Lotz, or Vinet, and apparently unrecorded as a separate printed title; the present manuscript may preserve the text of an ephemeral pamphlet not known to survive in printed form. [And with:] Het juichend Friesland ofte kort verhaal van de inkomst van Willem Carel Hendrik Friso, Prince van Orange en Nassau. Leeuwarden: Tobias van Dessel, 1734. Folio (328 x 210mm). 2 engraved large folding plates by JAN CASPAR PHILIPS after RUIK KEYERT. Contemporary marbled wrappers (somewhat worn); cloth folding case. A festivity book documenting the visit on March 24, 1734, at Leeuwarden, Franeker and Harlingen of William IV and his consort Anna, Crown Princess of Great Britain and Ireland. Berlin Kat. 2961; Landwehr 203. Provenance: Paul and Marianne Gourary (their sale, Christie's New York, 12 June 2009, lot 85, not mentioning the manuscript portion was not mentioned). FOUR 18TH-CENTURY FÊTE BOOKS, the first two celebrating the entry of William IV, (1711-1751) Prince of Orange and Nassau-Dietz, in Vlissingen and Veere, the third his visit as newly-married Stadtholder-designate to Leeuwarden, Franeker and Harlingen; the fourth entry is of William V (1748-1806), Prince of Orange and Nassau-Dietz, and his wife Wilhelmina of Prussia, born Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina, (1751-1820), in Amsterdam. With an apparently unrecorded manuscript account of a contemporary dispute over the design and construction of the ceremonial loge built for that 1768 visit.
