A few small old marginal repairs, some marginal finger soiling. Contemporary stiff vellum, gilt lettering-piece. Covers bowed. FIRST EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC ON HIPPOLOGY. The text is printed in two columns in French and Italian in roman and italic types. The plates were copper engraved by Gregori after illustrations by Eisenberg; they show the strengths and weaknesses of the animal by detailing every part of the horse's anatomy, including the head, tail, feet, neck, and legs. Friederich Wilhelm Baron d'Eisenberg, trainer, rider, and illustrator of horses, was director and riding master at the Academy in Pisa, and instructor to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco I, to whom the work is dedicated.
