1766 ❧ from King Charles II's personal chapel or royal library commissions. CHURCH OF ENGLAND. The Book of Common Prayer... Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David. London: printed by Mark Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty; and by the Assigns of Robert Baskett, 1766. Large folio (464 x 283 mm). Ruled in red throughout. Complete with an engraved architectural frontispiece depicting St. Paul's Cathedral under a banner reading 'The Book of Common Prayer'. Luxuriously bound in contemporary full dark green-black morocco. The covers feature an elaborate, broad gilt-tooled border composed of alternating crested lace and floral motifs, framing a monumental central gilt-stamped armorial supralibros of the Stuart Royal Coat of Arms of Great Britain. The spine is divided into seven rich gilt compartments separated by prominent raised bands, each beautifully stamped with the royal cipher of King Charles II-a crowned, interlaced double 'C' flanked by delicate gilt floral sprigs and palm fronds. Discreet repairs to spine. Provenance: The Rev. George Van Bibber Shriver (1906-1989)(presentation inscription from [?] H. Shriver to his 'very dear friend,' dated May 6th, 1959); Library of the Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, gifted by Mrs. George Van B. Shriver in memory of the foregoing (bookplate); Robert S. Pirie (bookplate). This grand folio production by Mark Baskett inherits the official royal patent held by his grandfather, John Baskett. This volume represents a phenomenal piece of bibliographical history: it seamlessly blends a mid-18th-century liturgical masterwork by the King's printer with a highly prestigious, grand-scale Restoration-era binding belonging to the elite circle of King Charles II's personal chapel or royal library commissions.
