1755 ❧ MASTERPIECES OF THE GENRE POISSARD, WITH PLATES IN THREE STATES. [LÉCLUSE, HENRY DE. 1711-1792. -- VADÉ, JEAN-JOSEPH. 1720-1757.] [Oeuvres Poissardes]. Le Déjeuner de la Rapée, ou Discours des halles et des ports. -- La Pipe Cassée, Poëme Epitragipoissardiheroicomique. Faisant la seconde Partie du Dejeuné de la Rapée. A la Grenouillere: De l'Imprimerie de Mademoiselle Manon, (ca. 1748 or later); A la Liberté: Pierre Bonne-Humeur, (ca 1755 or later). 2 works in one volume, 12mo (159 x 96 mm). First work: engraved frontispiece. Second work: engraved vignette on title-page; 4 headpieces IN THREE STATES engraved by Aveline after Eisen: without letters printed in red, without letters printed in black, and with letters. Early 20th-century morocco, sides with wide gilt borders, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands gilt, board edges gilt, wide turn-ins gilt surrounding blue morocco doublures with all-over gilt floral tooling, watered silk endleaves. Slight scuffing to rear board. Provenance: Auguste P. Garnier (1885-1966), poet and bibliophile (bookplate). 'NOUVELLE EDITIONS' of these masterpieces of the genre poissard. The two works, by Lécluse and Vadé, who is credited with creating the genre, comprise the standard collection of the Oeuvres Poissardes. The genre mimics the language, behavior, and manners of the lower classes and the market sellers of the Halles, particularly the seafood vendors (poissardes). La Pipe Cassée, Vadé's masterpiece, a comic epic featuring the workers of the Port au Blé and their companions, who worked as rag dealers or flower sellers in the vicinity of the Parisian markets. Yve-Plessis, Bibliogr. de l'argot', n°109 ('précieux pour l'étude du bas langage parisien au XVIIIe siècle').
