1762 ❧ OXFORD UNIVERSITY POETS. Gratulatio Solennis Universitatis Oxoniensis. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1762. Folio (365 x 234 mm). Text in Latin, English, Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, Arabic and Welsh. Contemporary red morocco, covers with double gilt fillet border enclosing a double gilt panel, with an ornamental roll within and fleurons at the corners, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, with Dutch gilt floral endpapers signed Johann Lupus Ehringers, likely executed for the publisher. Spine a little darkened, extremities lightly rubbed. LIMITED EDITION, one of a hundred large-paper copies printed on an early J. Whatman paper. The verses, all written by native Oxford poets, celebrate the birth of the future king George IV, son of George III and Queen Charlotte. The binding is most likely by Alexander Thompson, a binder to the university. See Maggs Catalogue #1212, Bookbinding in the British Isles, item 99.
