1827 ❧ MILTON, JOHN 1608-1674. The Paradise Lost of Milton. London: Septimus Prowett, 1827. 2 volumes, large 4to (360 x 252 mm). 24 black and white mezzotint plates by John Martin. Very occasional light marginal spotting. Contemporary full black morocco, multiple rules in blind and gilt on covers with floral tools at corners, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. Skillfully rebacked retaining original spines. FIRST EDITION. Martin's unforgettable illustrations for Paradise Lost were made specifically for mezzotint engraving. 'Like no other artist before him, he exploited the infinite black of the mezzotint plate, which served him as the elemental void: in Milton's terms, the primeval state of chaos, from which God conjured up the earth, the waters, and daylight...' (William Feaver, The Art of John Martin, p. 75). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
