1835 ❧ A fine calligraphic manuscript. BERKHOUT, W.C. Active 1830's. [Calligrapher demonstration manuscript.] Amsterdam: dated 1835-38 in text. Folio (390 x 239 mm). Dutch manuscript on fine thick wove paper. With several calligraphic subtitles (one of them in color), 4 watercolors, 12 washed pen and 38 charcoal drawings and a multi-colored multiplication disc, music, letter forms, book keeping forms, journals, etc. Mostly executed on only one side. Binder has occasionally trimmed some leaves. Very attractive modern half morocco with half morocco slipcase. A exceptional student handbook, or perhaps a teacher's demonstration book (of one W.C. Berkout) displaying his mastery of lettering for translating, commercial invoicing, various letter forms, for journals, numbering for arithmetic, and banking, with folding color wheel with detailed numbering, formal letter forms for official documents, music, ornate title-page designs, calligraphy lessons, and finally a series of fine watercolors and colored pencil drawings. The charcoal drawings, pen-and-ink washes, and watercolors were standard curriculum assignments to prove technical drawing and architectural drafting skills.
