1795 ❧ BIBLE. Bible in English. The Holy Bible, Ornamented with Engravings by James Fittler from Celebrated Pictures by Old Masters. London: Thomas Bensley for R. Bowyer & J. Fittler, 1795 2 volumes, 4to (307 x 240 mm). 76 engraved plates, including frontispieces, engraved general titles and divisional titles, original tissue guards. Intermittent marginal spotting or browning. Contemporary crimson straight grain morocco, heavily and elegantly gilt covers with broad ornate frame of multiple plain and decorative rolls, featuring an outer twining border of enclosed stars and an inner border of fleurons within closely spaced arches, raised bands, spine very densely and attractively gilt in compartments (the top and bottom compartments with closely spaced scalloped stamps mingled with tiny diamonds and flowers, the center 3 compartments exuberantly reticulated), gilt decorated turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Provenance: Richard and Mary Hull (inscription to flyleaf, see transcription below). Printed by Bensley (1760-1833), one of the most distinguished printers of the period, this is a luxurious large paper copy of a typographically handsome, attractively illustrated late 18th century English Bible in a beautiful lavishly gilt contemporary binding. According to Bryan, Fittler (1758-1835) 'distinguished himself by numerous works after English and foreign masters, of different subjects and character.' The full-leaf engravings here, which show a pleasing variety of styles after works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Rubens, Vandyck, Correggio, Poussin, and others, reflect the artist's range and skill. Also noteworthy here are the delicately engraved leaves that begin books (or groups of books) with a fine vignette headpiece and a calligraphic listing of chapter contents. In this edition, an unfortunate misprint in Mark vii, 27 has Jesus telling the Syrophenician woman that he will cast out the devil in her daughter as soon as the children of the household are 'killed' (instead of 'filled') with bread. Herbert 1394. The inscription on the flyleaf in full: 'Richard Hull and Mary Brettell Edridge married by the Reverend Dr Hodson at Croydon Church on Thursday the 25th Octr 1804 (Twenty fifth).
