The work tracks his complete thematic range from sweeping maritime vistas and pastoral landscapes to intricate friezes and capricci. The plates are prefaced by a comprehensive biographical overview authored by the notable British print seller and art writer Thomas Dodd. Dodd had acquired the plates (presumably from Basan in Italy) and his was really the first reliable account of Della Bella's life to appear in English up to that time.
