LIMITED EDITION, number 192 of 250 copies, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND PUBLISHER. A tour-de-force of nineteenth-century French book production, Le Livre de demain was conceived by Albert de Rochas and printed by Raoul Marchand as an extended demonstration of the possibilities of color, paper and typography. The opening sections consider the history and properties of paper, ink and color; the subsequent fascicles put these principles into practice, each becoming a new experiment in the relationship between type, ink, paper and ornament. Printed on papers of different weights, textures, colors and origins, the text is repeatedly framed by contrasting typographic borders, in combinations of color, gold and silver that vary from specimen to specimen. Literary and illustrative material becomes the vehicle for increasingly elaborate typographic effects, including specially commissioned engravings, silhouettes and photolithographs, together with four chromatic diagrams. Eleven paper specimens demonstrate the extraordinary range of materials available to the printer, extending from ancient papyrus to contemporary Oriental papers.
