1839 ❧ The text most fitted to Grandville's mind. GRANDVILLE, illustrator. 1803-1847. SWIFT, JONATHAN. 1667-1745. Voyages de Gulliver. Paris: Fournier Aine, 1839. 2 volumes, 8vo (215 x 135 mm). 450 wood engraved vignettes after designs by Grandville. Half morocco, marbled boards stamp-signed by Canape. Provenance: Aristide Marie (bookplate and pencil note in has hand regarding cleaning by Hitter ca. 1890); Pierre Collin (his sale, Pierre Berge Paris, 25 November 2021, lot 287). FIRST EDITION. 'Swift's text, with its pattern of logical development from impossible premises, fitted Grandville's mind better than any other to which he applied himself. Moreover, Gulliver has a broad humanity that preserves his designs from the schematic aridity which sometimes besets them.' (Ray). Beraldi makes the claim that Gulliver was Grandville's best book as well as the most convincing rendering of Swift's text for the French reader. Ray French, 192; Beraldi VII, 206.
