1856 ❧ An idiosyncratic masterpiece of 19th-Century anotomical illustration. MACLISE, JOSEPH. 1815-1880. Surgical Anatomy. London: John Churchill, New Burlington Street, 1856. Large folio (535 x 363 mm). Title-page with engraved vignette emblem of the Royal College of Surgeons, dedication leaf to Samuel Cooper, and 52 magnificent, large-scale lithographic plates, partially colored by hand by M. & N. Hanhart after the author's original monumental drawings. Some spotting, primarily affecting the blank side of plates. Contemporary 3/4 morocco over ribbed green cloth, spine panelled and lettered in gilt. Rebacked with original spine laid down, some fading and light staining. THE RARE REVISED SECOND EDITION-WIDELY CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST VISUALLY DRAMATIC AND IDIOSYNCRATIC MASTERPIECES OF 19TH-CENTURY ANATOMICAL ILLUSTRATION. Originally issued in 1851 with only 35 plates, this heavily expanded second edition features 17 completely new or entirely redrawn illustrations by Maclise. Maclise was an extraordinarily talented Irish-born surgeon and anatomist who studied under Samuel Cooper. He was also the younger brother of the celebrated Royal Academy historical painter Daniel Maclise. Rather than rendering dry, clinical diagrams common to standard medical textbooks, Maclise infused his monumental dissections with high artistic romance and classical composition. The figures are rendered not as flat corpses, but as lively, muscular torsos with alert, expressive faces-bearing dramatic, noble expressions that mirror the grand European fresco traditions of the era. The lithographic execution by the London firm M. & N. Hanhart is technically superb, rendering the vascular and muscular layouts with unmatched clarity and depth. Garrison-Morton 13302 (citing the 1851 first edition); Heirs of Hippocrates 954.
