1905 ❧ CHÉNIER, ANDRÉ. Les Bucoliques. Paris: Charles Meunier, 1905. 4to (267 x 195 mm). 12 lithographic plates by Fantin-Latour in three separate states and lithographic head and tail pieces by G. Simoes de Fonseca also in three states. Original marbled calf with bronze plaque by Denys Puech inset into the upper cover, gilt spine, uncut, board slipcase with cut-out to accommodate the plaque. LIMITED EDITION, number 30 of 150 specially bound copies on velin du Marais of a total edition of 177. The illustrations by celebrated Symbolist painter Henri Fantin-Latour, serving as one of his final completed graphic projects before his death in 1904, and the full-page lithographs by Fantin-Latour seamlessly evoke the ethereal, pastoral atmosphere of Chénier's poetry. They are beautifully supplemented here by the delicate, classical ornamentations of Gaston Simoes de Fonseca. The binding itself is a celebrated production by the master editor-binder Charles Meunier, who envisioned the book as a cohesive, multi-sensory object. Meunier famously commissioned the prominent academic sculptor Denys Puech to design a custom, low-relief bronze plaque for the upper cover. Depicting a Muse mourning over a monument to André Chénier, the tragic poet executed during the French Revolution, the volume makes for a fine tribute. Carteret IV, 102 ('Rare ouvrage coté, illustré par ce grand artiste'). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
