1823 ❧ PAPWORTH, JOHN BUONAROTTI. (1775-1847). Hints on Ornamental Gardening: Consisting of a Series of Designs for Garden Buildings, Useful and Decorative Gates, Fences, Railings, &c. Accompanied by Observations on the Principles and Theory of Rural Improvement, Interspersed with Occasional Remarks on Rural Architecture. London: Printed for R. Ackermann by J. Diggens, 1823. Large 8vo (263 x 175 mm). Illustrated with a hand-colored aquatint frontispiece and 29 aquatint plates (most hand-colored, Three plates are captioned in Spanish and the uncolored 'General Plan' had an overlay which is here bound in as an extra plate.) 3/4 red morocco over marbled boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Provenance: Carlos María della Paolera (exlibris on flyleaf). FIRST EDITION in book form of this work of early 19th-century picturesque landscape design, written by the architect and designer to the King of Württemberg. A beautifully produced manual published by Rudolph Ackermann, Hints on Ornamental Gardening stands alongside Papworth's Rural Residences (1818) as a definitive visual manifesto of the English Regency cottage and garden aesthetic. It introduces highly creative, idealized architectural accents-such as decorative aviaries, romantic bridges, garden seats, and elaborate fountains-designed to harmonize domestic rural structures with their natural surroundings. This first appeared in parts in Ackermann's Repository from 1819-1820 and appears here in book form for the first time. Abbey, Life 46; Tooley 360.
