1926 ❧ [BREMER PRESSE]. BIBLE, IN GERMAN. Biblia, das ist: Die gantze Heilige Schrifft Deudsch. D. Martin Luther. Munich: The Bremer Press, 1926-1928. 5 volumes, small folio (345 x 248 mm). Set in 'southern Gothic type designed by Willy Wiegand with initials and chapter opening by Ana Simons. Red morocco-backed boards by Gray Parrot. LIMITED EDITION, number 115 of 350 copies. The visual brilliance of the text block is primarily credited to the calligrapher Anna Simons, a noted student of Edward Johnston. Her crisp, structural, yet graceful hand-drawn initials provide the necessary artistic pacing to anchor the vast fields of Gothic type. The text edited and revised under the philological direction of Carl von Kraus, drawing from Luther's ultimate editions of 1545 and 1546. The Bremer Presse, 'described in the Gutenberg Museum at Mainz as the Queen of the Private Presses,' issued Biblia, das ist to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the completion of the Lutheran Bible (Franklin, The Private Presses, 1969).
