1930 ❧ Gulliver illustrated in color. [CRESSET PRESS]. SWIFT, JONATHAN. 1667-1745. Gulliver's Travels. London: Cresset Press, 1930. 2 volumes, folio (355 x 250 mm). Title-page vignettes featuring a bust of Swift, 12 hand-colored engraved plates, 5 full-page engraved maps, and 8 head- and tailpieces, all after designs by Rex Whistler. Some light offsetting from plates. Original green 1/2 morocco by Wood, vellum boards, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. Spines faded. LIMITED EDITION, number 4 of 195 copies on barcham green handmade paper of a total edition of 205. A masterpiece of 20th-century British private press book production. The illustrative style of Rex Whistler (1905-1944), which rejected stark modernist experimentation to embrace elaborate 18th-century rococo aesthetics, proved to be an ideal match for Jonathan Swift's satire.
