1960 ❧ The Garden copy. [OFFICINA BODONI]. ELIOT, T. S. 1888-1965. Four Quartets. London: Faber & Faber, 1960. 4to (296 x 193 mm). Tan morocco gilt, both sides with abstract landscape design, reversed calf doublures, edges gilt, by Ivor Robinson 1976; matching folding case. Provenance: The Collection of the Garden Ltd. (monogram bookplate, their sale, Sotheby's New York, 9 November 1989, Lot 289). LIMITED EDITION, number 10 of 290 copies printed by Giovanni Mardersteig and SIGNED BY T. S. ELIOT. This edition stands as the most textually precise and physically sublime printing of Eliot's late meditative masterpiece. The visual presentation represents a spectacular intersection of two legendary 20th-century book art giants: master pressman Giovanni Mardersteig and design bookbinder Ivor Robinson. Mardersteig's layout design follows strict Renaissance proportions, executing flawless hand-inked typography across highly textured Magnani sheets. This pristine, classical interior acts as a striking counterweight to Ivor Robinson's famously avant-garde exterior binding work. Breaking away from traditional trade apprenticeship conventions, Robinson approached fine bookbinding with the uninhibited vision of a fine-art painter or sculptor. His work, highly praised by historian Dorothy Harrop in Craft Binders at Work, pioneered a visual lexicon dominated by spontaneous, expressive hand-tooling. The present copy beautifully exemplifies this technique, using layered, erratic geometric linework to construct an expressive landscape summary of the Quartets' philosophical themes of time, nature, and decay.
