An Imperial Japanese WWII Award Sake Tray in good to very good condition. Japanese World War II–era award sake cups and trays were commonly produced as commemorative and presentation pieces during the 1930s and 1940s, reflecting Japan’s military culture and the importance of ceremonial drinking in Japanese society. These sets were often made from materials such as lacquered wood, metal, or ceramic and could feature patriotic imagery, military insignia, imperial symbols, slogans, or inscriptions honoring a soldier, unit, event, or achievement. Sake cups (sakazuki) were traditionally used in formal ceremonies and celebrations, while matching trays provided a presentation surface for the cups. During the wartime period, such objects could be given to servicemen or civilians to commemorate military service, victories, promotions, enlistments, or other significant occasions. Today, surviving examples are collected as historical artifacts because their inscriptions and decoration can provide information about the individual, military unit, ceremony, or period in which they were produced.
