A Vintage Early to Mid 1900's Japanese Landscape Hanging Scroll Painting in good to very good condition. This Japanese landscape hanging scroll reflects a long artistic tradition in which paintings of mountains, water, islands, and changing seasons were used to bring the beauty of the natural world into interior spaces. Known as kakejiku, hanging scrolls became an important form of Japanese art and decoration and were commonly displayed in homes, tea rooms, reception spaces, and ceremonial settings. Landscape painting, or sansuiga, was influenced by earlier Chinese traditions but developed a distinctly Japanese character, often emphasizing atmosphere, simplicity, distant vistas, and the harmony between people and nature. According to the consignor, the scene depicted here represents the Kujukushima, or “99 Islands,” located off the coast of Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture. The name Kujukushima is traditional and does not indicate an exact count the scenic archipelago is actually made up of more than 200 islands and islets, known for its rugged coastline and beautiful maritime scenery. Such locations were often celebrated in Japanese art as meisho, or famous scenic places, making this painting part of a broader tradition of depicting Japan’s celebrated natural landscapes.
