Sol LeWitt autographed and handwritten postcard measuring approximately 4 x 5.75", dated from Spoleto, Italy, September 3, 1980, and addressed to David Lee of Salisbury, Maryland. Sol LeWitt writes, "Dear David, I received your letter but am very sorry but I never write autographs. Regretfully, Sol LeWitt. P.S. Would you like a small drawing instead?" Beneath the postscript, LeWitt has added a small original geometric drawing composed of intersecting linear forms.

The postcard is particularly characteristic of LeWitt's conceptual approach, humorously declining to provide an autograph while both signing the correspondence and supplying the recipient with an original drawing. The verso bears Italian postage stamps, postal markings, and an affixed "Per Via Aerea / Par Avion" airmail label.

Very good condition with expected postal handling, light toning, and minor edge and surface wear.

Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) was an American artist closely associated with Minimalism and Conceptual Art. Beginning in the 1960s, he developed a highly influential body of work based on geometric systems, serial structures, written instructions, and the separation of artistic ideas from their physical execution. LeWitt became especially known for his wall drawings, modular sculptures, works on paper, and extensive use of simple geometric forms and predetermined systems.
