Details:
Filippo Pistrucci autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated 24 April 1822, written in Italian and signed at the conclusion, “Filippo Pistrucci.” The letter is addressed to “Signore” and discusses the sending of two tickets for an evening of “Poesia Estemporanea” (extemporaneous poetry), expressing admiration and polite sentiments toward the recipient. The heading includes “H. M. Royal Mint,” reflecting Pistrucci’s official position in London.
The manuscript is penned in dark ink on laid paper, with clear signature at lower right. Written during his tenure at the Royal Mint, the letter provides an appealing personal glimpse into the life of one of the most celebrated engravers of the 19th century.
Filippo Pistrucci (1783–1855) was an Italian gem engraver and medallist who became Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint in London. He is best known for his iconic depiction of St. George slaying the dragon, first used on the British gold sovereign in 1817—a design that remains in use today and is regarded as one of the most enduring coin motifs in numismatic history.
Light toning and scattered foxing consistent with age; fold lines present from original mailing. An attractive and historically significant signed letter from the master engraver behind one of Britain’s most famous coin designs.
