The ArtCraft cacheted cover bears a block of four 21-cent Giannini commemorative stamps and is signed prominently in blue ink by Spence across the lower portion of the cover.

A. Michael Spence (born 1943) is an American economist who shared the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with George A. Akerlof and Joseph E. Stiglitz for their analyses of markets with asymmetric information. Spence is best known for developing signaling theory, explaining how individuals and organizations convey credible information in markets where one party possesses more information than another. He has served on the faculties of Harvard University and Stanford University and was Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
