The cover bears a block of four 2-cent National Parks Centennial stamps with Hatteras, North Carolina, April 5, 1972 First Day of Issue cancellation and an illustrated cachet depicting the Oregon Inlet Lighthouse at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Rudolph A. Marcus (born 1923) is a Canadian-American chemist whose pioneering theoretical work transformed the understanding of electron-transfer reactions. He developed what became known as Marcus theory, providing a fundamental framework for explaining the rates of electron transfer in chemical and biological systems. For this work, Marcus was awarded the 1992 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
