Wolfgang Ketterle autographed First Day Cover commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Maine Statehood, postmarked Portland, Maine, on July 9, 1970. The ArtCraft cacheted cover bears a block of four 6-cent Maine Statehood stamps and is signed in black ink by Ketterle across the lower right.

Wolfgang Ketterle (born 1957) is a German physicist who shared the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics with Eric A. Cornell and Carl E. Wieman for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates. Ketterle has spent much of his academic career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his research has focused on ultracold atoms, quantum gases, and atomic physics.
