Vinton G. Cerf (1943-) and Robert E. Kahn (1938-) are American computer scientists whose pioneering work established much of the technical foundation of the modern Internet. During the 1970s, Cerf and Kahn jointly developed the architecture and TCP/IP communication protocols that allowed independent computer networks to communicate with one another, providing the basis for the interconnected global network that followed. Their work earned them numerous major honors, including the National Medal of Technology, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, and, in 2005, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Both are widely recognized among the principal architects of the Internet.
