Groucho Marx (1890-1977) was an American comedian, actor, writer, and television personality best known as the quick-witted leader of the Marx Brothers. Alongside his brothers Chico, Harpo, Zeppo, and Gummo, Marx helped create some of the most influential screen comedies of the early sound era, including Animal Crackers, Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera, and A Day at the Races. Recognizable for his painted mustache, cigar, stooped walk, and rapid-fire delivery, he later enjoyed another major career as host of the television and radio quiz program You Bet Your Life. Marx was also a prolific writer and correspondent, and The Groucho Letters preserves his exchanges with many of the leading cultural figures of his era.
