Alan Shepard (1923-1998) was an American astronaut, naval aviator, and one of NASA's original Mercury Seven astronauts. On May 5, 1961, he became the first American to travel into space aboard Freedom 7 during the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission. After being temporarily grounded by an inner-ear disorder, Shepard returned to flight and commanded Apollo 14 in 1971, becoming the fifth person to walk on the Moon. During the mission he famously struck two golf balls on the lunar surface. Shepard later served as Chief of the Astronaut Office and retired from NASA and the U.S. Navy in 1974 with the rank of Rear Admiral. Moon Shot, written with Deke Slayton, recounts the early American space program and the race to reach the Moon from the perspective of two of NASA's pioneering astronauts.
