James A. Lovell Jr. (1928-2025) was an American naval aviator and NASA astronaut who flew on Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13. As commander of Apollo 13 in April 1970, Lovell led astronauts Jack Swigert and Fred Haise through one of the most dramatic emergencies in the history of human spaceflight after an oxygen tank explosion crippled their spacecraft en route to the Moon. Lost Moon, written with journalist Jeffrey Kluger, recounts the mission and the extraordinary effort to return the crew safely to Earth. The book later served as the basis for the acclaimed 1995 film Apollo 13, in which Lovell was portrayed by Tom Hanks.
