Clyde Tombaugh, Gene Shoemaker, and Carolyn Shoemaker autographed commemorative postal cover honoring the Space Telescope and Space Shuttle program, postmarked March 21, 1981, at Parforex Station, Park Forest, Illinois. Tombaugh signed prominently in blue ink and added the inscription "Discovered 9th planet Pluto, on 18 Feb. 1930." Gene and Carolyn Shoemaker added their signatures along the lower portion of the cover.

Clyde W. Tombaugh (1906-1997) was the American astronomer who discovered Pluto at Lowell Observatory in 1930. Eugene "Gene" Shoemaker (1928-1997) was a pioneering planetary geologist whose work helped establish the field of astrogeology and included extensive study of impact craters and near-Earth objects. Carolyn Shoemaker (1929-2021) was a prolific astronomer credited with discovering or co-discovering numerous comets and asteroids. Together with David Levy, Gene and Carolyn Shoemaker discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which famously collided with Jupiter in 1994.
