Pete Best (1941-) is an English musician best known as the original drummer for The Beatles during the group's formative period from 1960 to 1962. Best joined the band shortly before its first extended engagement in Hamburg, Germany, and performed with the group through its early club years in Hamburg and Liverpool, including appearances at the Cavern Club. He played on The Beatles' 1961 recordings backing Tony Sheridan in Germany and participated in the band's January 1962 audition for Decca Records. Best was dismissed from the group in August 1962 and replaced by Ringo Starr shortly before The Beatles achieved international fame. He later returned to performing and recording with the Pete Best Band and has remained an important firsthand figure in the history of The Beatles' earliest years.
