This image originates directly from Dr. Gast’s personal collection and reflects his central role in overseeing and interpreting the lunar samples returned from the Moon. The photograph is printed on period Kodak paper and shows the rock mounted for examination.

Accompanied by an original letter of provenance from Sandy Clarkson of The Right Stuff, Inc., certifying that this photograph came from the personal collection of Dr. Paul W. Gast, NASA’s longtime head of lunar sample science.

Dr. Paul Werner Gast (1930–2015) was a pioneering American geochemist widely known as NASA’s “Moon Rocks Chief.” As head of the Division of Planetary and Earth Sciences at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Gast led the scientific teams responsible for analyzing and interpreting lunar samples returned by the Apollo missions. His work was instrumental in establishing the Moon’s geological history and advancing planetary science. Gast received numerous honors, including NASA’s Medal for Exceptional Service and the Distinguished Service Medal, and his leadership helped define the scientific legacy of the Apollo program.
