Edward R. Schowalter Jr. autographed First Day Cover commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, postmarked Washington, D.C., on March 11, 1974. The ArtCraft cacheted cover bears the 10-cent VFW commemorative stamp and is signed in black ink by Schowalter. He added the inscriptions "For God + Country," "CO A 31st Inf Regt 7th Inf Div," and "Kumwha, Korea Oct 14 '52," referencing his Korean War service and Medal of Honor action.

Edward R. Schowalter Jr. (1927-2003) was a United States Army officer and Medal of Honor recipient for his actions during the Korean War. On October 14, 1952, while commanding Company A, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, near Kumhwa, Korea, Schowalter led an assault against heavily fortified enemy positions. Although wounded during the attack, he continued to direct his men and press the advance. He later received the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat.
