The cover bears a 22-cent American Flag stamp with Denver, Colorado, May 9, 1987 First Day of Issue cancellation and an illustrated patriotic cachet featuring the American flag and fireworks.

George T. Sakato (1921-2015) was a Japanese-American U.S. Army soldier who served with the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II. On October 29, 1944, near Biffontaine, France, Sakato led a charge against German positions after his unit was pinned down, personally killing and capturing enemy soldiers while helping inspire his platoon to continue the attack. Originally awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, his decoration was upgraded to the Medal of Honor in 2000 following a review of awards made to Asian-American service members.
