Donald M. McPherson autographed First Day Cover honoring George M. Cohan, postmarked Providence, Rhode Island, on July 3, 1978. The ArtCraft cacheted cover bears the 15-cent George M. Cohan commemorative stamp and is signed by McPherson above a printed inscription identifying his wartime service: "Ensign Donald M. McPherson, VF-83, F6F-5 Hellcat fighter Pilot, Aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Essex, Air to air victories earned in combat - 5."

Donald M. McPherson (1922-2013) was a United States Navy fighter pilot and World War II flying ace. Serving with Fighting Squadron 83 aboard USS Essex, McPherson flew the Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat in combat operations in the Pacific and was credited with five aerial victories. His service placed him among the U.S. Navy aviators who achieved ace status during the final stages of the Pacific War.
