William R. Day autographed check drawn on The City National Bank of Canton, Ohio, dated November 10, 1892. The check is completed entirely in Day's hand, made payable to J. J. Miller in the amount of $25.00, and signed "William R. Day." A purple "PAID" bank cancellation is present, along with period notations including "Hospital Assessment." An attractive and early financial document from the future Supreme Court Justice, signed several years before his appointment to the nation's highest court.

William R. Day (1849-1923) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1903 to 1922 after being nominated by President Theodore Roosevelt. Prior to his service on the Court, Day was Secretary of State under President William McKinley during the Spanish-American War and later headed the American delegation negotiating the Treaty of Paris, which concluded the conflict. Earlier in his career, he practiced law in Canton, Ohio, where he became a close friend and trusted adviser to McKinley.
