Benjamin O. Davis Jr. (1912-2002) was a pioneering U.S. Air Force general and commander of the famed Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. A 1936 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Davis endured racial segregation throughout his early military career before taking command of the 99th Fighter Squadron and later the 332nd Fighter Group, whose combat record helped demonstrate the effectiveness of Black military aviators. He subsequently held senior commands in the newly independent U.S. Air Force, served in Korea and Europe, and retired as a lieutenant general in 1970. In 1998, President Bill Clinton advanced Davis to the rank of four-star general. His autobiography American recounts his military career and experiences confronting racial discrimination while helping reshape the United States armed forces.
