Barbara Jordan autographed typed letter signed on official United States House of Representatives letterhead, dated October 16, 1978, and addressed to Ronald F. Wade of Lone Star, Texas.
Jordan thanks Wade for his correspondence and comments, notes her plans to accept a teaching post at the University of Texas at Austin following her departure from Congress, and discusses the recent Camp David Summit. She writes that she had not spoken with the President or Vice President regarding the summit, but adds that if the meeting's consequences resulted in "a lasting peace," she supported it wholeheartedly. Signed "Barbara Jordan" in black ink above her printed congressional identification.

Barbara Jordan (1936-1996) was an American lawyer, educator, and politician who became one of the most important civil rights and political voices of the 20th century. She was the first Black woman elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and later became the first Black woman from the South elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Jordan gained national prominence during the Watergate hearings for her powerful defense of the Constitution and later taught at the University of Texas at Austin.
