Fred M. Vinson autographed personal check drawn on the Louisa National Bank of Louisa, Kentucky, dated December 4, 1928. The check is imprinted "Fred M. Vinson, Attorney and Counsellor at Law," made payable to Smith & Dugan in the amount of $92.50, completed in Vinson's hand and signed "Fred M. Vinson." The reverse bears period banking cancellation stamps from December 8, 1928. A desirable early financial document from Vinson's legal practice nearly two decades before he became Chief Justice of the United States.

Fred M. Vinson (1890-1953) served as the 13th Chief Justice of the United States from 1946 until his death in 1953 after being appointed by President Harry S. Truman. Before joining the Supreme Court, Vinson enjoyed a distinguished public career as a U.S. Representative from Kentucky, Secretary of the Treasury, and Director of the Office of Economic Stabilization during World War II. As Chief Justice, he presided over the Court during the critical years immediately preceding the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, helping guide the Court through a transformative period in American constitutional history.
