Albert Scott Crossfield (1921-2006) was an American naval aviator, aeronautical engineer, and pioneering test pilot. In 1953, flying the Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket, he became the first pilot to fly at twice the speed of sound. Crossfield later served as North American Aviation's chief engineering test pilot for the X-15 program and made the aircraft's first powered flight in 1959, becoming one of the most important figures in the development of high-speed and experimental aviation.
