Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1930 to 1941, after previously serving as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1910 to 1916. He also served as Governor of New York and as U.S. Secretary of State, and was the Republican nominee for President in 1916. As Chief Justice, Hughes presided over the Court during the major constitutional conflicts of the New Deal era.
