Charles W. Lindberg autographed 10 x 8-inch black-and-white photograph depicting the approach to Iwo Jima during the opening of the battle. Lindberg signed and inscribed the upper left, "Charles W. Lindberg / 1st Flag Raiser, Iwo Jima."

A typed caption affixed to the verso reads, "On Feb. 19, 1945, the largest Marine force ever to go into battle, backed by the greatest Armada ever established in the Pacific, began the assault on a tiny rock only 700 miles from Tokyo."

Charles W. Lindberg (1920–2007) was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II and one of the six Marines who raised the first American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. A flamethrower operator, Lindberg participated in the combat patrol that reached the summit before the better-known second flag raising photographed by Joe Rosenthal later that day. He received the Silver Star for gallantry in action at Iwo Jima.
