George Wallace (1919-1998) was a four-term Governor of Alabama and one of the most controversial political figures of the 20th century. He mounted several campaigns for the presidency and became nationally known for his segregationist politics before later renouncing those views. Wallace survived an assassination attempt during the 1972 presidential campaign that left him permanently paralyzed.
