Sohei Nishino (born 1982) Diorama Map Kyoto, 2003 Chromogenic print; flush-mounted, framed, two Michael Hoppen Gallery labels, one signed in ink, on the reverse; this work is no. one from an edition of 5. 53 1/8 x 56 1/4 in. (134.9 x 142.9 cm.) Footnotes: Provenance Michael Hoppen Gallery, London Acquired from the above by the present owner in 2017 Note We often consider maps-and the role of photography in constructing them-as objective realities. In the twenty-first century, abundant satellite imagery and visual data copiously and continuously document planet Earth, but in actuality the camera has been an apparatus of scientific and geographical authority since the origins of photography in the nineteenth century. Sohei Nishino's series Diorama Maps reintroduces photography as a medium for recording personal memories and subjective experiences of the world around us. Inspired by the 18th-century Japanese cartographer Inō Tadataka, Nishino began his map-making project when he was a student at the Osaka University of the Arts in Japan. After selecting a specific city, he spends months exploring and photographing every corner, side street, footpath, landmark, and topographical contour that he can possibly access in that location. After amassing thousands of 35mm photographs, he then works from his memory to assemble these image fragments into a large-scale, collaged composition. Rather than creating an accurate geographical reference, each collage presents an emotional, photographic diary of the artist's journey through a city.
