Ormond Gigli (1925-2019) 'New York City' (Girls in the Windows), 1960 Pigment print, printed later; signed, titled, dated, and editioned 'A.P. 2/4' in ink in the margin 28 x 28 in. (71.1 x 71.1 cm.) sheet 34 3/4 x 34 in. (88.3 x 86.4 cm.) Footnotes: Literature Reflections in a Glass Eye: Works from the International Center of Photography Collection (Boston, 2000), pl. 63 Christopher Sweet, Ormond Gigli: Girls in the Windows and Other Stories (New York, 2013), cover and p. 23 Note When Ormond Gigli learned that the Beaux Arts building that faced his 58th Street studio was soon to be demolished, he recognized the narrow window of opportunity afforded him. Armed with a bullhorn, his 4x5 Speed Graphic camera, 43 models (including both Gigli's wife and the wife of the demolition supervisor for the building), a Rolls Royce, and a driver, he embarked on the herculean task of arranging the models amid the dilapidated building's skeletal facade and capturing his most iconic composition. The resulting image is a mesmerizing plane in which fashion and fantasy meet vibrant geometry. The models' dresses (from their own wardrobes), each one distinctly different from the next, take center stage against the crumbling brownstone building behind them. Conceived in 1960 without client or commission - Gigli has called it his most memorable self-assigned photograph - New York City (Girls in the Windows) has become one of the most collectable images in the post-war photographic canon.
