(22.9 x 19.7 cm.) sheet each approximately 10 x 8 in. (25.4 x 20.3 cm.) Footnotes: Literature Bill Brandt: Shadow of Light (London, 1977), pls. 94 (Dubuffet) and 95 (Lartigue) Note 'I always take portraits in my sitter's own surroundings. I concentrate very much on the picture as a whole and leave the sitter rather to himself. I hardly talk and barely look at him. This often seems to make people forget what is going on and any affected or self-conscious expression usually disappears. I try to avoid the fleeting expression and vivacity of a snapshot. A composed expression seems to have a more profound likeness. I think a good portrait ought to tell something of the subject's past and suggest something of his future.' - Bill Brandt, The Photography of Bill Brandt, p. 196 Brandt took this portrait of poet T.S. Eliot at the offices of Farber & Farber in Bloomsbury, London, circa 1945, and the image was subsequently published in the July/August 1945 issue of Harper's Bazaar. Painter Jean Dubuffet's portrait was shot at Col de Vence, Alpes-Maritimes, in 1962. In 1974, Brandt photographed photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue at Opio, Alpes-Maritimes and novelist John Le Carré near Land's End, Cornwall.
