Provenance: Exhibition “Berliner Secession,” Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin, undated, no. 175, with illustration; formerly in the collection of Klaus, son of the writer Gerhart Hauptmann, and his wife Eva (née Bernstein). Exhibition “In Berlin and by the Sea,” Museum of Art and Cultural History, Hanseatic City of Lübeck, 1988, ill. p. 54, no. 44 (Michael “Michel” Hauptmann, Hamburg, is listed as the lender; he apparently arranged the loan on behalf of his mother, Eva). The painting passed to the sellers’ family by inheritance. The catalog as a bonus.
